China’s domestic tourism revenue expected to exceed $510bn in 2021

International travel restrictions are not having an effect on Chinese tourists’ yearning to travel. In fact, the domestic tourism industry has been booming since China’s lockdown restrictions eased.

According to the latest report from the China Tourism Research Institute, the desire to travel among China’s population will remain above 85% in 2021. The China Tourism Research Institute expects the domestic tourism market to recover considerably this year. The number of domestic tourist trips is expected to reach 4.1 billion in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 42%. Domestic tourism revenue will reach 3.3 trillion RMB ($510 billion), a 48% rise from 2020.

According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, there were 2.88 billion domestic tourists in 2020, a decrease of 52.1% year-on-year due to the impact of COVID-19.
