Popstar Kris Wu’s Weibo account removed following police detention

The Chinese-Canadian singer and actor Kris Wu has been accused of predatory behaviour and sexual assault of several Chinese young women. The accusations, which were made by 19-year-old Du Meizhu on 18 July, triggered a huge discussion on social media.

On 31 July, police from Beijing Chaoyang district released a statement saying that he had been detained for suspected rape. Police are still investigating the case.

Wu has quickly fallen from his star status. All brands that had been working with him terminated their contracts.  After the police announcement, Wu and his company’s Weibo accounts were suspended. A celebrity and an influencer also saw their accounts taken down after they posted support for him. Kris Wu’s wax figure was also removed from Madame Tussauds Shanghai museum.
