China’s movie market generates 3.9bn RMB in 8 days

The Chinese movie market generated a total of 3.9 billion RMB during the eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays, according to box office big data platform Lighthouse.

On the first day of the National Day holiday, films raked in 743 million RMB, which was not just the highest single-day record for 2020 in China but also globally. The days to follow were no less impressive, leading to the first four days of the holiday accounting for 2.5 billion RMB.

Nearly 100 million moviegoers visited cinemas, making this year the second-best National Day holiday performance ever.

Along with Chinese New Year, the National Day holiday is one of China’s peak box office periods.

This impressige surge in sales could help China to surpass the US as the largest box office in 2020.
