A high-tech institute, backed by the Chinese government, has announced a major achievement related to what it called “the world’s fastest” 6G-oriented real-time wireless transmission. It is understood that the research team has achieved a sixth-generation (6G) level wireless transmission, up to a speed of 206.25 gigabits per second, for the first time in a lab environment, according to the post by Purple Mountain Laboratories on 5 January.
With the development of 6G technology, it is expected that the peak transmission speed could be up to 100 times faster than the current 5G system, which had already enabled data to be transferred at a speed that is 20 times faster than previous standards.
It also lays the foundation for future 6G holographic communication, the emerging buzzword “metaverse”, as well as other new applications that are not yet developed. This further advancement within the tech space is sure to excite people globally when it can be fully developed for use.
While countries in the other parts of the world are still rolling out the 5G technology, China is expected to see 6G technology enter its market around 2030, as according to the Chinese telecom’s equipment giant Huawei – a leading provider of 5G networks.
According to the lab, the achievement provides a range of application prospects, which include integration with existing fiber optical networks to expand 100-1,000Gbps outdoor and indoor ultra-high-speed wireless access.
It could also “significantly” reduce costs and power consumption by “replacing the huge number of cables in the data centre, allowing a more efficient Internet communication.” For now, this technology is not close to being rolled out, but the prospect for businesses is immense, with being able to offer better and more convenient data networks for their customers and new consumers alike.
China has shown its commitment to becoming a technology powerhouse, with the government doubling down its efforts in rolling out 5G technology in the past year. The country had built and put into operation about 1.4 million 5G base stations across the whole nation as of last November, as per the South China Morning Post.
Now the making of the 6G network is supported by a special government project on this technology and achieved in collaboration with telecoms giant China Mobile and Fudan University. With the latest breakthrough, it has advanced China’s status in leading the development of global technology, furthering China’s ambitions and showing the rapid rise of the country over the last 100 years.
