K-drama fan mail delivers Shunfeng Express a viral hit

Shunfeng Express and the K-drama moment: Key takeaways

  • Tens of thousands of fans reportedly used SF Express to send letters to Korean actor Park Si-woo during a three-day China visit.
  • The broader Weibo discussion generated more than 800 million reads and 1.2 million discussions, according to local reports.
  • SF used the unexpected attention to promote its dedicated fandom and anime shipping services.

Shunfeng Express (顺丰) has adopted a new ambassador: a fan-mail-swamped Korean star. Park Si-woo – who amassed a following in China for his part in a niche but surprisingly popular Korean drama – hit Shanghai last week on a press tour. Crowds met him at the airport. Many tried to hand off their fan mail. Not all could, and so Park offered an alternative: the collection address for his hotel.

#朴时宇10个行李箱 (Park Si-woo’s 10 suitcases) has blown up

He gave fans three days to get their letters to him and promised to take every one back to Korea. China-wide, fans took him at his word. Most chose SF Express to get their messages to Shanghai.

Photos of Park then started hitting the web, him sitting among genuine sacks of letters, lying on a floor carpeted with envelopes and making heart gestures from behind piles of post.

Weibo topic, #朴时宇10个行李箱 (Park Si-woo’s 10 suitcases), generated more than 800 million reads and 1.2 million discussions. Users joked that SF had received heaven-sent traffic and an unusually effective piece of unpaid promotion.

Their smartest move though, was to use the buzz to spotlight its dedicated fandom-delivery service

SF jumped on the opportunity. Its official social accounts moved quickly to acknowledge the event, thanking Park for the attention and engaging with fans in the comments.

Their smartest move though, was to use the buzz to spotlight its dedicated fandom-delivery service. The offering provides protective packaging for photocards, signed photographs and fan merchandise, alongside international shipping – including routes to Korea for fans who missed Park’s hotel deadline, or have other stars they want to contact.

The Dao view: Shunfeng Express delivers more than a viral moment

SF was smart to turn an accidental fan frenzy into a showcase for its existing fandom-delivery service. It could have just used the moment for plain old exposure. Instead, it connected thousands of visible SF envelopes to a practical offering for the same audience: safer packaging for photocards and merchandise, plus international delivery. The best reactive marketing gives the audience somewhere useful to go next.
