According to initial calculations by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 89.14 million tourist trips were made across China during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday. The travel volume during this year’s festival, which took place today (14 June) but spanned the weekend, increased by 94.1% over last year. However, it was lower than the 100 million trips predicted by China’s top travel agency Trip.com.
Tourism during the long weekend brought in 29.43 billion RMB ($4.6 billion), a year-on-year increase of 139.7%. Tourism revenue from the festival has recovered to 74.8% of that before the pandemic.
Dragon Boat Festival dates back to ancient Chinese traditions and occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. People usually reunite with their family and eat zongzi 粽子, a glutinous rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaf.
