Mainland China is expected to surpass North America to become the world’s largest box office in 2020.
China’s box office has taken in 7.7 billion RMB so far in 2020. With the COVID-19 pandemic still shutting down cinemas and delaying films in the US, some Chinese experts are predicting that the Chinese market may surpass it to become the world’s largest film market. The upcoming National Day holiday is a major box office earner: in 2019, the holiday earned 4.38 billion RMB.
The war epic The Eight Hundred surpassed 2.88 billion RMB globally to become the top-earning film of 2020 on Sep 20.
