Taobao turns a Zhang Linghe endorsement into a three-part shopping drama

Taobao and Zhang Linghe: Key Takeaways

  • Key takeaways Taobao stretched Zhang Linghe’s endorsement across three episodic films, turning a one-off celebrity appointment into a summer-long narrative
  • Each mission dramatised a different use for instant commerce—from urgent delivery and milk tea to Qixi flowers—supporting Taobao’s expansion beyond food delivery
  • As regulators scrutinise subsidy-led competition, Taobao is using character, suspense and continuity to build a brand identity that rivals cannot simply undercut.

Actor Zhang Linghe (张凌赫) has been sent on three missions by Taobao Instant Commerce (淘宝闪购). The first required urgent delivery. The second sent him searching for a million-yuan pearl. The finale placed him inside a Republican-era dance hall with an instruction in his earpiece: find a red rose.

Taobao have run one celeb endorsement through three films and a whole summer

Before he can complete the mission a courier arrives with a bouquet. Suspense gives way. This, it turns out, is really an ad for Qixi flower-delivery. It’s also a nifty way to expand the lifespan of a celebrity endorsement. By appointing Zhang as ambassador alongside its fictional Taobao Flash Sales Agent Bureau, Taobao have run one celeb endorsement through three films and a whole summer.

Three films, three missions, three uses for instant delivery

Summer Express Mission, released on 15 July, introduced Yuexiang membership’s one-to-one urgent delivery. A tense assignment moved between the film set and the story being filmed to sell rapid response and a service that arrives ‘just for you’. Coupons, free delivery vouchers and 10 million red packets added the transaction layer.

On 7 August, The Real and Fake Million-Yuan Pearl turned a valuable object into bubble tea. Zhang’s hunt for a pearl ended with an order for pearl milk tea. Humour carried the platform’s claims about delivery-speed. Searches for ‘the first cup of autumn’ unlocked group-buying offers, drink vouchers and limited merchandise.

Code Name: Red Rose completed the series around Qixi. From 17 to 19 August, searching Zhang’s name opened a flower hub offering versions of the film’s bouquet from RMB99 (US$14.75). In each film the service enters because the mission requires it: dispatch a courier, track a pearl, deliver a romantic gesture, Taobao Instant Commerce is the answer.

Celebrity marketing with a next episode

The series format solves problem innate in celebrity endorsement campaigns: announcements make the biggest splash, later assets become watered-down visual keys. Zhang’s fictional identity gave the campaign somewhere to go and its episodic nature worked as a way to keep excitement high.

The agent device is flexible and urgency comes built in

Moreover, the agent device is flexible and urgency comes built in. That allows claims about delivery speed to be dramatised. Taobao can also swap objects in an out without breaking the fictional world: documents, drinks, flowers, whatever its next sales calendar requires.

There were still, of course, the visual assets to accompany. Airports and commercial landmarks across 16 cities played host to those. For Qixi, Zhang appeared on 15 major screens in ten cities. More than 200 screens across over 60 Shanghai and Hangzhou metro stations were used made the finale feel like a public event.

Why quick commerce needs a plot

The campaign arrives as Alibaba tries to deepen the habits created by China’s quick-commerce battle. In its June-quarter results, the company said revenue from Taobao Instant Commerce, Freshippo and other on-demand businesses rose 45% year on year to RMB53.3 billion (US$7.86 billion). Now they’re seeking higher-value food orders and growth in non-food categories.

The three campaign films and their respective subjects support that goal. Milk tea creates frequent, low-risk orders. One-to-one delivery and gifting teach consumers that the platform can solve more varied, higher-value needs.

A character-led campaign gives Taobao something rivals cannot match with another coupon: identity

Price has also become a harder battleground to win on. In June, regulators proposed rules to curb below-cost selling and excessive subsidy tactics. The proposed rules come after a year of heated competition and carved out price floors between the big delivery apps. A character-led campaign gives Taobao something rivals cannot match with another coupon: identity.

The Dao view: build memory before the sales moment

Taobao did not begin with a conventional Qixi love story. By the time Chinese Valentine’s Day came around, viewers had already met the agent twice and learnt the format. In other words, they were primed for a third mission. When the rose appeared, the campaign had landed a product offer with a movie-twist payoff.

In doing so, Taobao has turned one famous face into reusable brand property. Delivery speed can be copied, discounts matched and product ranges overlap. A recognisable world helps the platform make each shopping occasion feel meaningful.
