Chengdu’s street signs go viral with humor and wit

Chengdu is once again making waves online—this time with a series of witty, offbeat street signs that have caught the public’s attention.

One reads: “If God closes your door, just open it again—that’s how doors work.” It’s blunt, laid-back, and effortlessly confident. Classic Chengdu.
At Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, the slogan “The Happy Airport in the City” sounds like standard promo copy at first. But locals quickly picked up on the subtle dig at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, which sits much farther from the city center.

Then there’s this traffic safety gem: “Don’t drink cars, don’t drive alcohol.” The phrasing seems off at first, but that confusion is the point—it cleverly mirrors the disorientation of drunk driving, making it both funny and strikingly effective.
Even universities are getting in on the fun. Sichuan Normal University recently held “The Launch Ceremony for the One-Year Countdown to the 80th Anniversary.” Yes, a countdown to a countdown. Only in Chengdu.

These slogans aren’t just going viral for laughs—they reflect how audiences today prefer humor over lectures. A clever line that makes people smile is far more likely to stick, especially in the social media age. And for public messaging or brand campaigns, that makes all the difference.
