Huge demand for tickets for the war epic film The Eight Hundred have resulted in China’s daily box office sales hitting a new high since cinemas reopened a month ago. Ticket sales brought in 220 million RMB on Saturday, of which “The Eight Hundred” contributed over 190 million RMB according to data provided by Maoyan, a film data platform.
The 3D digital restoration of Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone was holding the post-COVID box office record with 157 million RMB of ticket sales in a single weekend.
The Eight Hundred shows Chinese soldiers defending a warehouse against the invading Japanese army in 1937 during the Sino-Japanese War. It looks to be one of 2020’s most successful films in China and has grossed more than 560 million RMB so far.
