Nothing But Thirty 三十而已 is the TV drama series which is currently THE talk of the town in China.
The series follows the story of three women who are in their thirties and live in the city. It approaches the struggles and challenges they face as 30-year-old women in China – typically the age when unmarried women in China are given the title of “leftover women.”
The drama has become incredibly popular in China and there are 132 hot topics related to the series on Weibo. Netizens commented that it is changing people’s perspectives towards Chinese women over 30 years old and that social pressure shouldn’t control a woman’s life or decisions. By revealing the burden on women aged 30 and over, the series shows that women don’t need to get married, have a decent job or settle down at a specific age.
Another TV series called Sisters Who Make Waves 乘风破浪的姐姐 became popular this year after also challenging stereotypes about Chinese women. The reality show featured 30 female celebrities over the age of 30 who fought for a place in a band.
