Personalisation is at the core of Crocs’ global-first experiential store

Crocs’ experiential store: Key takeaways

  • Crocs by You in Wuhan puts personalisation at the centre of the brand’s first experiential retail store globally
  • Exclusive Jibbitz charms, customer displays and planned creator partnerships give shoppers opportunities to participate in the brand
  • The format builds on China’s importance to Crocs and could encourage repeat visits between footwear purchases, but creativity is the real star of the show

Part of the appeal of a pair of Crocs (卡骆驰) is customisation. Colours, charms and collaboration merchandise turn the basic shoe into a form of creative expression, something playful, elaborate and personal.

At its new store, Crocs by You, at Wuhan’s Wushang Dream Plaza this idea forms the basis for what the brand is billing as its first experiential retail store globally.

The format combines footwear shopping with customisation, creative activity and community participation. Its starting point is a behaviour already built into the product: choosing what goes into holes on the shoe.

Crocs as a creative project

There’s a range of colours to choose from and to the usual offerings Crocs add a store exclusive in Banana Ice. But Jibbitz charms – the name for those little customisable elements – are at the core of the store’s layout.

Eight charm categories are stocked. Exclusive designs are also present and include a ritzy 18K gold-plated options. As you move further into the store, a Hall of Fame area displays creations from brand ambassadors and fashion figures. Consumers can also get their creations up here by uploading their designs to the store’s mini-program.

This is all here to give Crocs a message beyond comfortable footwear

This is all here to give Crocs a message beyond comfortable footwear: one of freedom of expression. It could have quite a future. Crocs plans to involve emerging creators and local cultural communities in future activities, and once that ball is rolling there are almost unlimited avenues it could go down.

Collaboration, for example, is a way more open playing field for Crocs than it is for, say, a coffee brand: new colourways could be designed and limited-edition Jibbitz charms minted.

Regular brand ambassadorship strategies also have great potential. Crocs aren’t limited to picking a pretty face or considering follower count. A cult figure in any creative sphere could offer as much while keeping to the brand’s core message.

Crocs are marketing on a message of creativity, and have potential to be uniquely creative in how they get that message across

Ultimately, it’s a beautiful advertising feedback loop. Crocs are marketing on a message of creativity, and have potential to be uniquely creative in how they get that message across.

Experimenting in a major market

China is the right place for the brand to try out this kind of experiment. Crocs reported that its China business grew 64% in 2024. That makes China the brand’s second-largest market after the US, but the real news is in the rising consumer interest. 64% growth looks like a number out of the China gold-rush years.

The Jibbitz add-ons, meanwhile, accounted for 8% of global Crocs brand revenue that year. Accessories are already a notable part of the business then. The Wuhan flagship gives them a retail environment that will nurture their potential.

There’s a useful aspect for development in this format. Shoppers can compare combinations. They can try them on and take inspiration from other people’s creations, all in one place. If that experience proves commercially effective, Wuhan will help inform how Crocs presents personalisation across its wider China network.

The Dao view: A store brimming with opportunity

Crocs’ customisable design also creates a useful opportunity for consumers: shoppers can refresh their style without replacing their shoes. Giving that activity space, exclusive products and public recognition could change the way people shop for shoes, encouraging visits between purchases.

Pushing the creative element behind this buying pattern is a smart move for Crocs. It’s fertile ground for marketing and branding. We’ll be looking forward to seeing what they come up with.
