Xiaomi Auto issues late-night apology—why do netizens say it’s “a new story every day”?

On the night of May 7, Xiaomi Auto posted a statement on its official Weibo titled “Answers to the Questions Everyone Cares About.” The company issued two apologies addressing recent controversies surrounding its SU7 Ultra model. The post quickly shot to the top of Weibo’s trending list.

The first issue came from reports by several bloggers that a recent system update on the SU7 Ultra limited its power output. The car’s peak 1548 horsepower was locked, and owners would now need to achieve track achievements to unlock it. Otherwise, the vehicle would be capped at around 900 horsepower. This sparked an uproar online. One user commented, “Many people bought the SU7 Ultra for its high horsepower. Now you’re limiting it right after we get the car?”

The backlash was mainly over Xiaomi making such decisions without owner consent, raising concerns over consumer rights. In response, Xiaomi apologized, saying, “Our original intent was to ensure safer driving, but we failed to fully consult our users and didn’t clearly explain how the feature works. That’s on us.”

The second issue centered around the car’s carbon fiber dual-vent hood, which some owners and bloggers claimed didn’t live up to its design promises. One blogger aimed a blower at the hood vents and showed that a tissue placed near the vents didn’t move at all. Some even dismantled the hood and concluded the vents didn’t effectively direct airflow to the braking system or create downforce as advertised.

Xiaomi addressed the concern, saying, “While the dual-vent carbon fiber hood on the SU7 Ultra does meet design goals, it only provides limited airflow and helps slightly with front-compartment cooling. We apologize for not communicating this clearly.” To make up for it, Xiaomi is offering a one-time option for customers with pending deliveries to switch to the original aluminum hood. For customers who already received the car, the company will offer 20,000 loyalty points.

Despite these moves, not everyone was satisfied. Some netizens complained that Xiaomi Auto keeps “telling a new story every day.” There are also people saying the brand is still learning and growing, but stressed that it needs to come up with clearer, more consistent solutions going forward.
