On 13 March, Legoland Shanghai Resort announced that it is in the final stage of construction and will be opening this summer as planned. After its completion, the Shanghai Park will be the 11th Legoland in the world and the first one to open in China. The Shenzhen Park in Guangdong Province, South China, is still under construction.
The park’s announcement says that 80% of its rides have been installed, and 12 of the 24 rides are in the testing phase. These include three first-in-the-world rides, one of which is in the theme of Monkie Kid (LEGO’s version of the Monkey King). The 60-metre-tall Observation Tower has been completed and undergoing testing, while the largest LEGO figure has also been completely installed, standing at 26 metres tall and weighing 136 tonnes.

The exteriors of all buildings at the Legoland Shanghai Resort are 85% complete, and the interiors are 93.5% finished. The exteriors are decorated with over 40,000 square metres of large-scale versions of LEGO bricks. There will be 2,889 LEGO models built with over 85 million LEGO bricks. 97% of the models are now complete. On Weibo, China’s Twitter equivalent, the topic “Legoland Shanghai will open this summer” (#上海乐高乐园今年夏季开业#) gained 4.08 million views.
The resort will be 318,000 square metres in size with a hotel attached, and will be divided into eight areas with 75 attractions and rides. Construction began in November 2021, and there will be a trial opening period where the park can host 2,000 to 5,000 guests each day. By the second half of the year, the park will be welcoming over 1 million visitors. Apart from Shenzhen, another Legoland Resort is planned for Sichuan province in Southwest China.
