“You Called It Fakebubu”: China Customs is Gen Z’s new favorite comedian

China Customs’ official WeChat account, Customs Release (海关发布), is going viral for its sharp headlines, dry wit, and unexpectedly great sense of humor. Posting 2–5 times a day, the account shares customs busts from across the country, all delivered with meme-worthy captions and Gen Z flair.

Lately, it’s been all about Labubu. With headlines like “You Called It Fakebubu,” “20,000 Buwawas, Not a Single Labubu,” and “Lafufu: 30,000+ and Still Counting,” the account documents the wave of counterfeit toy seizures in a tone that’s more punchline than public service announcement. Netizens joked the customs team has fully “entered the Labubu multiverse.”

But the headlines don’t stop there. Mixing internet slang with absurd punchlines, Customs Release has mastered the clickbait art form:
“Now You’re in Big Trouble” — a drug bust
“Who Did the Crocodile Slap?” — four confiscated crocodile paws
“Walking Ahead of Time” — a smuggler hid a watch in their shoe
“Who’s Playing This Kind of Go in Beijing?” — Go stones made from endangered animals
“The Turtle Woke Up and Everything Had Changed” — tortoises smuggled in backpacks
“OOTD” (Outfit of the Day) — someone strapped old phones and watches to their body
“Apple Tree” — 50 iPhones tied around a passenger’s waist
– And yes, someone even tried to sneak through customs using a “Customs-Invisibility Talisman.

Since adopting this playful tone in 2023, Customs Release has grown to over a million followers across WeChat and Weibo. Behind the jokes is a smart strategy: turning law enforcement updates into digestible, viral content. Millions of young people laughing their way into learning about customs law—and maybe thinking twice before smuggling a suitcase full of Lafufus.
