Hermès travelling exhibition opens in Shenzhen

Between 17 May and 1 Jun, the French luxury brand Hermès will be bringing its travelling exhibition, Hermès in the Making to Shenzhen, Guangdong, in Southern China. Hosted in Tide Square at the Shenzhen Talent Park, the exhibition will be free to attend with appointments made on the “Hermès at Work” WeChat Mini-Program.

As the title suggests, the exhibition puts its focus on the artisans and craftsmanship behind each Hermès product. The tour kicked off in Copenhagen back in October 2021, with Shenzhen being its 12th stop and the first in China. The experience will be divided into 4 themed areas, one about the brand’s artisanal heritage, the second about the materials it uses, the third about its sustainable pledge and the fourth about localisation.

The exhibition covers the Maison’s iconic Kelly bag, watches and jewellery, and its hand-painted china from Hermès’s homeware department, all the way to its roots in equestrian sports such as saddle-making. Artisans from several departments at Hermès will be demonstrating their go-to materials and unique techniques at the exhibition. Workshops, interactive activities, and films will also be strewn across the space for visitors to experience.

In late April, Hermès saw its market value overtake LVMH, becoming the highest valued listed company in France. The brand recently upgraded its The MixC store in Shenzhen to a larger location last October. The latest exhibition shows that the Maison is doubling down on the city between Guangzhou and Hong Kong. In fact, Hermès’s CFO Eric du Halgouët said in April that its sales in Hong Kong saw competition from Shenzhen. It would seem Mainland China continues to be one of Hermès’s most important markets.
