The first 5G lane for autonomous driving vehicles opened yesterday in Hefei, Anhui province. Spanning 4.4 kilometres, the circular road can be used for both self-driving vehicles and ordinary vehicles simultaneously.
Construction started in August 2019 and took just a year to test and complete. The road has been installed with full 5G network coverage, devices to monitor road conditions and a cloud platform control centre.
Over a dozen Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, have been approved to conduct road tests for self-driving vehicles. Gaode, one of China’s leading navigation services, also recently launched driverless taxis in Guangzhou.
