Chinese social media platform Weibo, e-commerce platform Tmall, and skincare brand Fresh have jointly released the “2021 Medical Aesthetics Industry Report”. This report has highlighted some interesting statistics on the changing trends of downstream consumers within this industry.
The past two years have seen the medical aesthetics industry receive growing attention in China, evolving from a niche area of interest to a more widely accepted practice.
China’s Gen Z makes up the highest percentage among the medical aesthetic consumer market at 59%. Most members of this demographic are currently either finishing their university studies, working, or getting married, and find themselves at a stage in which their demand for highly effective “anti-ageing” products and practices is particularly high.
According to the report, Thermage, a non-invasive skincare treatment, has gained great attention, seeing an increase in popularity by 506%, ranking first on the list of the most popular medical aesthetic therapies. This treatment relies on the use of radiofrequency to help smooth, tighten and contour the skin for a more “youthful” appearance.
Having grown up with the internet, the Gen Z demographic obtain information online very efficiently, and with an increased consumption power, they now constitute an influential group that pays growing attention to information related to medical aesthetics online.
The exploding popularity of short videos and live broadcasts in China has also meant that online personalities and Key Opinion Leaders in the beauty and skincare industries have also been attracting many consumers. For example, one of the most famous influencers focusing on medical aesthetics, Potato Fancy, has generated 192 million RMB in sales during two livestreams.
Another factor driving the boom of China’s beauty industry has been the rise of men’s ‘appearance anxiety’. The percentage of male interest in medical aesthetics has in turn increased, approaching 30% in the first half of 2021. Furthermore, this year has seen a growing trend of men paying more attention to medical aesthetic projects online.
According to the report’s data, people’s primary motivation for the use of medical aesthetic services and treatments is for self-improvement with one’s own appearance.
